🎧 Chrome on Mobile: Podcast-Style Listening
Chrome has taken “Read Aloud” to the next level. If your device has the latest update (version 140.0.7339.124 or newer), here’s what you can do:
-
Open the webpage you want to hear.
-
Tap the three-dot menu (top-right).
-
Select “Listen to this page”.
A mini-player appears with play/pause controls, a progress bar, and speed adjustments (slow → fast). You can also highlight text or have the page auto-scroll as you listen.
The magic: If your Chrome version supports it, you’ll see an Audio-Overview option. This transforms the experience from a standard reading into a full AI-driven podcast: two voices read and discuss the content as if hosting a mini-show, making your page come alive.
The audio keeps playing even if you switch apps or lock your screen — just like a podcast or music player.
Rollout note: Not everyone will see this immediately. Chrome updates roll out gradually, so if it’s not on your device yet, don’t worry — it’s coming.
💾 Old Version — Chrome (Android & iOS)
If your device hasn’t received the new podcast-style update, you can still listen using the classic “Read Aloud”:
-
Open the webpage.
-
Tap the three-dot menu (top-right).
-
Tap “Read Aloud”, “Read Aloud Page”, or “Listen to This Page”.
Your phone will start reading the page aloud in a single voice. It’s simple, hands-free, and works on most mobile Chrome versions.
🍏 Safari (iPhone/iPad)
-
Open the webpage in Safari.
-
Tap the “aA” icon in the address bar.
-
Choose “Speak Screen”.
-
Swipe down from the top with two fingers to start reading.
🌐 Edge & Firefox (Android & iOS)
-
Open the webpage in the browser.
-
Tap the menu (three dots) and select “Read Aloud” if available.
The browser will begin reading the page aloud.
💻 Desktop/Laptop
Most desktop browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) do not have a built-in read-aloud feature by default. However:
-
Accessibility extensions or add-ons can provide text-to-speech.
-
Mobile browsers still provide the simplest built-in experience.
🔧 Tips for the Best Experience
-
Adjust the voice, speed, or volume in your phone’s accessibility or browser settings.
-
Use headphones for better clarity if you’re in a noisy environment.
-
Try it on one page first — it’s simple, hands-free, and addictive!
Listening to content makes long articles easier to digest and allows you to multi-task while still absorbing the material. With Chrome’s podcast-style reading, it’s not just reading anymore — it’s an enjoyable, conversational experience.
